40k had its tongue firmly in cheek... in the eighties. Up through Rogue Trader it was good, silly, badwrongfun. Then the fanboys took over, and it got serious, and as a result, it got stupid. As for tropes, you really shouldn't need to know what tropes you're using. I know from personal experience that the moment I start thinking about writing in terms of tropes is the moment I stop thinking about it in terms of the characters or the plot. When you start writing like that, you start relying on the tropes alone to carry the story, when they never, ever should. |
