To me it feels more like he never gets his just kicking in Evangelion. Shinji's constant pounding in 3.0 by the wille dicks and Gendo's lack of said pounding, adding on top the almost Deus Machina way the 3.0 world came to be, felt like Anno unsubtley playing favourites in a way. I know there's one movie left for the 'thwarting kicks to the crotch but I think his are going to be unsatisfying love taps, and greatly overshadowed by the ones Shinji will receive.
