The key to understanding Asuka is understanding competition. If there are no other competitors, she will feel needed, appreciated, and special, hence her wanting to do everything herself. That is what she lives off of.
So, going back to the main point, Asuka wants to be the one and only. The most important part in this scene (as I see it) is when she says: "if I can't have you all to myself, then I want nothing from you'. She will give nothing to someone who is at all partial to her, and will give all to someone that will return such undying, complete devotion. A bit illogical, but hey, she IS a mentally unstable female after all.
I realize that doesn't answer the question of whether or not it was real- depends on your definition of real. It was all part of the instrumentality process. |
